How the Medicare rebate works

A Mental Health Treatment Plan is written by a GP in a longer appointment. With one in place, Medicare rebates part of the cost of a set number of sessions each year.

Book a long GP appointment and say it is about mental health. Without a plan, you can still be seen at the full fee.

How to find a good psychologist

A search for a “psychologist near me for depression and anxiety” returns dozens of names. The harder question is who you will keep going back to.

Fit matters more than credentials.

Everyone here is qualified. What decides whether therapy works is whether you can be honest in the room.

You are allowed to switch.

Not clicking after a few sessions is information, not failure.

Usually weekly or fortnightly at first, moving further apart as things improve. Your GP reviews the plan after the first few.

For most people, yes, though it rarely feels that way after one session. The evidence in depression, anxiety and trauma is strong, and the benefit builds over time. If it’s not helping, change psychologist rather than give up.
